Pool leak detection in Naples, FL.
Losing water faster than the Florida sun should be taking it? Here's how to tell the difference between evaporation and a real pool leak — and when to call in a pro.
The bucket test
The bucket test is the fastest way to rule out evaporation. A pool and a bucket sitting side by side lose water to evaporation at roughly the same rate, so if the pool drops noticeably more than the bucket, water is going somewhere it shouldn't.
- Fill a 5-gallon bucket about three-quarters full of water.
- Set the bucket on the top step so it's partially submerged.
- Mark the water level inside the bucket and the pool level outside it.
- Turn the pump off and wait a full 24 hours (48 is better).
- Compare the drops. If the pool lost more water than the bucket, you likely have a leak.
Common signs of a pool leak
- Water level drops more than 1/4 inch per day
- Cracked tile, grout, or shell around the waterline
- Wet spots, sinking pavers, or lush grass near the pool
- Air bubbles in the return jets
- A sudden jump in the water bill
- Autofill running far more often than usual
